The Japan District is one of the four districts in the DoDDS-Pacific Area of the world-wide Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) system. There are 21 schools in the district, all accredited by the North Central Association (NCA) for Schools.

The school district serves family members of the Yokota Air Base Community, Camp Zama Army Community, NAS Atsugi Community, Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka Community, MCAS Iwakuni Community, Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo Community, and Misawa Air Base/NAF Misawa Community.

The DoDEA's Community Strategic Plan (CSP) is the basis of the district's overarching goals. The CSP goals are:
